Of course, this is not a comprehensive list. There are so many more health documentaries you can watch. This is a list of my favorite documentaries, that have truly opened my eyes to aspects of health I have never considered before, and I know they will do the same for you.

Prepare to be challenged, amazed, distraught, outraged and excited all at the same time.

Why Watch Health Documentaries: Community

Health documentaries not only expand your mind to help you see health in a new way. They can also inspire you to stick to your lifestyle, in a world where you are surrounded by people who don’t have the same health goals.

We are social beings, but even if you’re not surrounded by vegans in your home or in your town, there are many new, exciting ways to feel part of a community. Watching these health documentaries is a great one!

Why Watch Health Documentaries: A Holistic Health Approach

10 Health Documentaries to Change your Life and Go and Stay Vegan | Soul in the RawI wrote this list of health documentaries with a holistic approach to health in mind. Health is not only the wellbeing of our physical and emotional selves. It is also about the wellbeing of the animals and the planet as a whole.

I recently heard a powerful message that deeply resonated with me about the connection between the health of the planet, the animals, and our own personal health on an interview between Rich Roll and Kathy Freston.

When the planet is healthy, not only is our physical health better: we can breathe better and live better. It also guarantees our safety in inhabiting this universe for many years to come.

When animals suffer, humans suffer too, as the powerful work of Dr. Will Tuttle demonstrates. Many cruel practices that humans have performed on animals have later been used on humans as well.

In addition, the suffering and violence being inflicted on animals are edible, transmitted to our body through consumption, and in turn, impacts our health.

Having this holistic approach to our personal health and wellbeing also helps maintain a healthy, plant-based lifestyle.

The health documentaries I am sharing with you in this post have been a secret weapon on my vegan journey, and they will be for you too. They will become the force behind your conviction of eating a plant-based diet and living a vegan lifestyle.

Going vegan for your health is incredible and praise-worthy, but it also makes it easy for you to slip up. Having a more powerful reason to eat plant-based that is beyond your own personal gain will not only help you to overcome cravings. It will also make you feel empowered and extremely excited about your food choices.

The 10 Best Health Documentaries:  Mind, Body, Soul and Beyond

These 10 health documentaries will open your mind to new concepts that you may not have considered before.

Watch these films more than once, because they will motivate you over and over again to stay vegan long-term, and to live in line with your chosen values, a challenge in our modern world.

This list follows no particular order. Under each film, you will find a short description of its most powerful points, as well as a link to where you can watch it.

My Favorite Place to Watch Health Documentaries: Food Matters TV

Food Matters is like the Netflix of wellness documentaries! On Food Matters TV, you can watch hundreds of inspiring documentaries, expert interviews and recipe videos in one place. It is my absolute favorite place to watch documentaries – convenient, easy, and always so inspiring!

This film examines the way modern cultures view mental illness, as compared to traditional wisdom. It suggests that there is a lot we can learn from people around the world who have used their crises for a positive transformation.

Having several mentally ill family members, this film absolutely blew my mind and allowed me to see mental illness in a new way that aligns with my intuitive understanding.

Watch this film to gain an entirely new perspective on mental illness, and to grasp the human mind in a new way. This film will inspire you to connect with others who experience mental illness and to understand their needs better.

Even if you do not know anyone dealing with mental illness, it will encourage you to appreciate the power of your own mind and its abilities to overcome anything. It will also help you realize that what we have learned about our minds from modern medicine may be extremely limited.

The sensitivity of the director of this film is touching and inspiring, and his ability to connect and truly understand the needs and experiences of humans who have been through mental illness is instructive of his message in the film.

 Speciesism: The Movie

Speciesism is a foundational film that explores the commonly held belief that human animals are superior to non-human animals. Its low-budget feel makes it even more appealing to watch, as you focus on the main, incredibly thought-provoking question: what makes us morally above animals?

This film will challenge your belief system, as you watch the director probe into factory farms and uncover why they are so well-hidden.

It will strengthen your belief in the equality of all species and will expand your mind and challenge your thinking about the hierarchy of species on our planet if you’ve never given it thought before.

 What the Health

The creators of Cowspiracy bring you this incredible, truly groundbreaking film that exposes the corruption behind how “health” is defined in the public eye, with the support of big business and even health-oriented non-profits.

It is surprising, shocking and terrifying, and is a must-see for everyone. If your grandparents and even parents are still telling you to consume animals for protein, or dairy for calcium, grab them and watch this film together, as it will help them understand the roots of these nutrition myths.

Not only will you learn some valid and solid science in support of the healthiest way to eat: whole food, plant-based, but you’ll also learn why many myths and confusion exist around food and health.

 The Power of the Heart

The Power of the Heart explores the human heart, its strength, and the science behind its capabilities.

This film will make you cry, and leave you in awe of the beautiful images on the screen. The most touching moment includes a recounting of the Rwanda genocide by a brave woman who was almost killed by her own classmates. Her secret for surviving was connecting back to her heart.

This incredible documentary will remind you to get connected to your heart, to meditate on its power, and to live a much more authentic life as a result. It was a very powerful reminder for me, and I am sure it will be for you, too.

 Forks Over Knives

To this day, I am extremely touched by the message of this plant-based documentary. Forks Over Knives shows us how most degenerative diseases can be controlled, and often reversed on a plant-based diet. This film started a strong movement towards whole food plant-based eating, and it is a classic must-see.

It has already inspired thousands to go plant-based with its simple, actionable message, and it will definitely inspire you too. The website is a treasure trove too: it has many amazing articles and recipes that will easily keep you plant-based.

This is definitely a foundational film, and if you haven’t already, go and watch it!

 Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home

This powerful film explores the struggles of several traditional farmers who question their way of life and interaction with animals. Not only does this documentary explore the psychological and emotional struggles of the farmers, but also the economic and social forces at play.

One of the most powerful aspects of this movie is the footage of the emotional and cultural lives of animals – often viewed as commodities. While I don’t usually watch graphic movies that include a lot of horrific footage about animal agriculture and the treatment of animals, I ended up watching this film with a group of friends and I am glad I did. It has definitely helped my evolution into an animal-rights activist.

Watch this film to understand more about animal lives and what they go through, and strengthen your emotional connection to these beautiful creatures. Not only will it inspire you not to eat them – it can also inspire you to educate others to go vegan, too!

 PlantPure Nation

PlantPure Nation tells the story of the renowned researcher R. Colin Campbell, his son Nelson Campbell and Kentucky State Representative Tom Riner as they propose a pilot plant-based diet program in the legislature. Unfortunately, this plan is killed off by agribusiness lobbyists.

The film documents how a top-down approach continually fails and argues that we the people have to take the power into our own hands and to fight for the truth about the plant-based diet. By putting a community in his own North Carolina hometown on the diet, and providing them with fresh plant-based meals, Nelson Campbell demonstrates its powers to change health in just 10 days.

The film also shows and addresses the phenomenon of food deserts – areas in the USA that are completely devoid of fresh fruits and vegetables.

PlantPure Nation really did begin a movement all across the United States by advocating for the establishment of PlantPure Pods that would work to lobby for the plant-based diet and become hubs of nutritional change in their respective hometowns. This film is close to my heart as I helped establish and co-run PlantDiego, the San Diego PlantPure Pod, close to its inception.

Watch PlantPure Nation to not only see the power of the plant-based diet in action as it changes the lives of communities living in food deserts but also to get inspired to become an activist in the health movement. You will see, once again, that change does not come from governments. Change comes from humans like you and me, and it will inspire you to help create the change we all seek!

 You Can Heal Your Life

Louise Hay sweeps us away in the idea that we have the power to heal ourselves, mainly through the power of our minds and thoughts.

Louise Hay has been an incredible force in my life: she has taught me to take charge of my life, feel more empowered, and really start to notice my own thoughts and self-talk.

Louise believes that it all starts with knowing we are enough. And this is what you will learn from watching her: you are enough, and you are capable of changing your life, no matter what your situation is.

I continue listening to Louise’s incredible audiobooks, and never cease to learn from her. Watch this film to remember how powerful you are, and begin a journey of self-healing and self-transformation that starts in your mind and heart.

 Food Choices

There are so many vegan documentaries out there, yet each one isolates only one aspect of veganism, whether it is health, the animals or the planet.

Like the others, this film also contains powerful interviews with experts, physicians, environmental scientists, and more.

But there is something very unique about Food Choices. What I adore about Food Choices is the connection between all three. It explores how our food choices impact our health, the health of the planet, and the animals.

Watch this film to bring all the information about veganism together: learn about the interconnected nature of all beings on this planet, and about how your food choices are not an isolated occurrence. They have the power to heal or kill, so much more than just yourself.

 Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret

This film, which is truly becoming a classic, exposes the havoc that animal agriculture wreaks on the environment. It discusses facts about the impact of animal farming on greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water shortages, and more.

In addition, this incredible film, which I had to watch several times just to remember all the powerful facts it presents, also exposes the unwillingness of environmental non-profits to acknowledge the impact of animal agriculture on the environment.

Watch this film to get educated about the ways that eating animals impacts our planet, and acquire yet another powerful reason to go vegan.

How Not To Die: The Role of Diet in Preventing, Arresting, and Reversing Our Top 15 Killers, by Dr. Michael Greger

I absolutely had to include this speech, which is completely free to watch online.

You cannot help but get swept away, convinced, and entertained by the legend, Dr. Michael Greger, as he explains to us that broccoli and kale have no big business behind them, but do have the power to heal us!

If you are a fan of some good science, and love hearing about the power of plants through unbiased, non-industry funded science, you need to watch Dr. G in action.

I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Greger speak twice. His energy and passion is never-ending, and he is truly a force to be reckoned with and my personal hero!
