Vegan Grocery Shopping Tips for a Fun Shopping Experience

These five simple tips on vegan grocery shopping should get you in and out of the store quickly and painlessly, with a cart full of delicious, healthy foods that contribute to your well-being and taste buds:

  1. Start with the produce section, always

It’s a no-brainer: the produce section is filled with healthy foods, conveniently located all in one spot. If you shop there, there is no going wrong. Fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, nuts and seeds, beans and whole grains should be your first place to shop, and they’ll make you least overwhelmed since they are all beautifully laid out in front of you.

  1. Make sure to fill up 70% of your shopping cart with 1-ingredient items

Remember that produce section we talked about? Well, 70% of your cart should be filled with those delicious, healthy foods. Just go ahead and stuff your cart with them without thinking too much about it – they are the basis for a healthy diet, and they are as close to nature as you’ll ever get.

  1. Follow your vegan grocery list when you shop to avoid impulse buys

Alright, so don’t just stuff your shopping cart to the brim with the healthy foods in the produce section. Having a list to follow is extremely helpful because it means you will avoid impulse purchases, and you are then much more likely to use up all the groceries that you buy.

A little bonus tip here: don’t go grocery shopping hungry. This means you’re much more likely to make those impulse purchases that usually involve a little more junk food than you want to be eating.

4. Write down items that you’re running out of throughout the week

This is a tip I shared in a recent post about stocking the perfect vegan pantry, and I thought it’s quite worthwhile to mention it again here.

Writing down food items that you’re running out of throughout the week will help you construct your vegan grocery list, and purchase foods that you actually enjoy eating. This means you won’t find a bunch of rotten vegetables in the fridge at the end of the week that you have to throw away.

5. Want to make the best health choices? Read labels!

Reading nutrition labels is far easier than you may think. When you shop for packaged foods, reading labels will be the key to purchasing items that are health-promoting.

All you have to do is make sure you understand the ingredients (if you see a crazy word on the list that you’ve never heard of before, just put the item down), and that the product is made up of all whole foods (no oils, processed sugar, etc.).

In addition, make sure that the fats, protein, and carbohydrates on the label all have numbers. This will also help you find products that are made up of whole foods, and less refined or processed.

6. Bonus tip: always start with the flyer

Wherever you go, check out the sales flyer. It will tell you which items are on sale, and you can always easily swap one produce item for another, even in the most detailed recipes you follow.

A great part about this is that it’ll also help you get more variety in your diet. Try to pick a new type of bean, grain, fruit and vegetable each week, especially according to what’s on sale. This will help you get more phytonutrients and flavors, so you never get bored of your vegan diet.
